Zoom Playdate: Games that Kids Can Play Together

by | Apr 24, 2020 | Creativity

Here are five games that kids can play together over a video call.

Mystery Item Guessing Game

How to Play:

  1. Have each child bring 3 objects to the video call and hide the item from the other person
  2. Take turns trying to get the other player to guess the item.
  3. Kids will get creative coming up with clues and once the other player guesses correctly, they can reveal the item.

Share a Story

How to Play:

  1. Players will take turns going back and forth, telling a story.
  2. It can help to have an object that starts the story, like a favorite toy or doll. This is a great prompt for what the story can be about.
  3. Player 1 starts, like “Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Elsie”
  4. Player 2 then comes in with the next line, “And then she went to the store to buy apples”.
  5. Kids may need prompting. A simple “what happened next” or “and then Elsie did…”
  6. Younger kids may enjoy telling short stories and keep starting over again. That’s okay and a great way to keep the giggles going.

Scavenger Hunt Show & Tell

How to Play:

  1. Before the call, have kids do a scavenger hunt (a simple one like items that are “red, blue, green, yellow, and brown”)
  2. On the call, they can share what they found on the hunt.
  3. Tip: Use a shoebox or a small basket. One of the rules of the game can be that everything needs to fit in the box.

Matching Game

How to Play:

  1. Each player prints this printable from HOMER and cuts the pictures out before the call. It’s a great activity to practice using child-safe scissors.
  2. Each player spreads the items out in front of them.
  3. Take turns holding up an item and the other player needs to find the matching picture.

Silly Noises Guessing Game

How to Play:

  1. Using the same printable for the matching game, each player takes turns trying to get the other player to guess the animal based on making noises or sounds like that animal.
  2. Once the player guesses correctly, show them the picture.
