Things our kids teach us…

Every day, we learn as much from our children and they learn from us. Today, we’re starting a series of shared parent stories about moments in which the child becomes the teacher and the parent gains wisdom. Our first story comes from HOMER’s Co-founder and mother of three young girls, Stephanie Dua. Recently, Team Homer has been pushing the boundaries on who we will be in the future and developing a stellar team to make it happen. Growing, however, always comes with a few growing pains. After completing a few team-building sessions, Stephanie sat down with her oldest child to talk about her week. Here’s what happened:

So at dinner tonight, Siona asked me, “what did you do today?

I said, “I met with our team to talk about our company culture. What do you think culture means”

She said, “Culture is what makes up a company or city or country. It is their language in words and actions. It is not just want they say but what they mean. It is like a family tree. It is all the parts together.”

I then asked her, “What do you think is the most important thing you have to have to build a strong culture if you had to rank them, 1 to 5?”

She thought for a moment, and then she said “TRUST” is culture. (I kept looking around to see if someone was behind her feeding her the lines.)

Then I asked, “What does trust mean?”

She said, it means:

“1. What you say you are going to do – you do

2. You never hide or pretend to feel one thing but say another

3. Being able to rely on your fellow teammates because they are the best person to ever be in that role

4. You can say the ideas you think matter and people will listen because you have proven your ideas to be worthwhile

5. Everyone can say exactly how they feel when they feel it – and without judgment “

Above is what Siona said word-for-word.

I thought it was wonderful to hear…
