A few weeks ago, our Co-founder Stephanie shared a sweet moment when her daughter revealed wisdom around teamwork and trust. This week, our “Things Kids Teach Us” series continues as we hear from Samantha Duggar, another HOMER mom and employee, and her reminder that it’s important to follow through on promises.
Several years ago when my now-11 year old daughter was 4 years old, I was returning to the workforce after being a stay-at-home mom. I had signed a contract with a very small, rural school to teach 1st grade. On the day I went to sign my contract, my daughter asked me what it was all about. I explained to her that I was making a promise to the school that I would work for them the next school year. A few weeks later, I received a much more lucrative offer from a different school district, and I was trying to make a tough decision.
My daughter asked me what was wrong.
I explained the situation.
After thinking about it for a moment, my insightful daughter said “Mommy, you already made a promise to work for Niangua, and you can’t break a promise, that is WRONG!”
Although the new offer would have been better for us financially, I kept my original “promise” to the first school district because of my child’s wisdom. I worked for that district for 5 years, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. Lead by example.
